Doctors Study Link Between Combat And Brain Disease, 23 Jan 2010, European Stars and Stripes
By Seth Robbins, Stars and Stripes
The California neuropathologist who discovered damage in the brains of former professional football players has found similar damage in the brain of a deceased Vietnam veteran – a potentially groundbreaking finding that suggests combat troops who suffer head trauma might be susceptible to a degenerative brain disease.

Army wives with deployed husbands suffer higher mental health issues
Army wives with deployed husbands suffer higher mental health issues, 13 Jan 2010, USA Today
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are having a devastating effect on the military family. The military is finding that it will need to also address the mental health needs of the spouse as service members deploy to war. Wives of soldiers sent to war suffered significantly higher rates of mental health issues than those whose husbands stayed home, according to the largest study ever done on the emotional impact of war on Army wives.

Study: Youth now have more mental health issues
Study: Youth now have more mental health issues, Associated Press, 11 Jan 2010
A new study has found that five times as many high school and college students are dealing with anxiety and other mental health issues as youth of the same age who were studied in the Great Depression era. The findings, culled from responses to a popular psychological questionnaire used as far back as 1938, confirm what counselors on campuses nationwide have long suspected as more students struggle with the stresses of school and life in general.

Morphine shows promise against post-traumatic stress disorder
Morphine shows promise against post-traumatic stress disorder, LA Times, 14 Jan, 2010
Studies find that troops who got the powerful painkiller when injured were about 50% less likely to develop PTSD than those who didn’t. The findings offer hope for preventive treatment. Early administration of morphine to military personnel wounded on the front lines during Operation Iraqi Freedom appears to have done more than relieve excruciating pain. Scientists believe it also prevented hundreds of cases of post-traumatic stress disorder, the debilitating condition that plagues 15% of those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Experience of Children from Military Families
Views from the Home Front
The Experience of Children from Military Families, Rand Corporation, Dec 2009
This study highlights that deployment is a period of transition and potential stress for military families; however, there is limited understanding of the experience of children from military families. In addition, there is little information with respect to their overall well-being. Although studies have begun to explore the impact of the current wars on child well-being, none have examined how children are doing across social, emotional, and academic domains. In this study, we describe the health and well-being of children from military families from the perspectives of the child and non-deployed parent. We also assessed the experience of deployment for children and how it varies according to deployment length and military service component.
